Most people think of inflammation as something that happens after you twist an ankle — a short, visible, healing response. But a surprising amount of inflammation runs quietly in the background for years, driven less by injury than by what's on your plate, and it's been linked to heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, and even mood.
What Feeds Inflammation
The standard American diet is generous with the foods that keep this process running: red meat and full-fat dairy high in saturated fat, fried and processed foods loaded with trans fats, sodas and refined sugars, white bread and pastries, and processed meats like bacon and deli cuts. None of these need to disappear entirely, but eaten as a daily default, they push the body's inflammatory response into overdrive.
What Calms It Down
The foods that counter inflammation are just as familiar: berries, leafy greens, and colorful vegetables; fatty fish like salmon and sardines; walnuts and flaxseed; whole grains instead of refined ones; olive oil in place of other cooking fats; and spices like turmeric and ginger. The Mediterranean diet, built almost entirely around this list, has a strong track record for lowering inflammatory markers over time — you don't have to follow it perfectly to benefit from leaning in its direction, and it's a shift we see plenty of patients around Fitchburg and Madison make gradually rather than all at once.
Diet and chiropractic care work on the same problem from different angles. Less inflamed tissue tends to respond better to adjustments, heals faster after an injury, and holds the benefits of care longer. You don't need to overhaul every meal overnight — swapping in one anti-inflammatory food at breakfast, lunch, and dinner is a realistic place to start.
