By mid-afternoon most days, the headache shows up right on schedule — dull, behind the eyes, the kind that usually traces back to nothing more complicated than not drinking enough water since breakfast. It's one of the most common, most fixable things we see.
Here's a practical way to actually hit your target instead of guessing:
- Start with your body weight. A rough target is half your body weight in ounces — a 150-pound person aiming for around 75 ounces daily, more on hot days or during exercise.
- Spread it through the day. Drinking it all at once doesn't work as well as steady intake — keep a water bottle within reach and refill it on a schedule rather than waiting until you're thirsty.
- Watch for early signs, not just thirst. Fatigue, dry mouth, and headaches often show up before thirst does — by the time you're thirsty, you're already behind.
- Check your urine color. Pale yellow is the target; darker means it's time to catch up.
- Adjust for the season. Wisconsin summers and dry winter heating both increase fluid needs more than people expect.
Hydration also matters for your joints and spine specifically — spinal discs are made up largely of water, and staying ahead of your intake supports disc height and cushioning, which affects how your back feels day to day.
None of this requires overhauling your routine overnight. Pick one anchor — a glass with breakfast, a refill at your desk by mid-morning, a bottle in the car — and build from there. It's a small habit with an outsized effect on how you feel by the end of the day.
